Exploring our Common Themes in 3 Films About Men
- Expand your views of yourself in a learning community of other men.
- Explore and experience how men have unique ways of being that we can all embody to be our own best man, to be more fully hu-man and alive.
- Expand your community of friends who talk personality, character development, meaning and modern masculinity.
This is an exciting start to new men’s programming at UUCV. We’re meeting with professional mentor Dale Rhodes to explore how men develop character, as seen in films. Our first Saturday Sept 20 is a welcome and introductions meet-up for everyone participating in the four-session program.
Thereafter, we will discuss one film each month and explore how we relate to the broader themes in each the film’s male characters:
- Film – Mud: Men who value mental planning, predictability, safety, security and loyalty: Discuss on Oct 11
- Film – The Pursuit of Happyness: Men who value relationships and connecting, identity and image: Discuss on Nov 8
- Film – The Holdovers: Men who value presence, ethics, action and having an effect on our environments: Discuss on Dec 6*
You just watch the film on your own and consider a few questions sent to the participants. In the session we will ask: “What do these character arcs– the challenges and values of these men– have to teach us about being fully ourselves as men today?” You will feel ready (and likely excited) to explore how men develop character and values, as you find those in yourself and amongst the others in the class. Plenty of time for dialogue; we’ll hear from those who want to discuss more in the group together, and hopefully we’ll hear from you. It’s that good and it’s that simple.
